Budget 2009: Cars

I welcome any step Alistair Darling takes towards incentivizing lower emission cars like the DVLA recommended SEAT Ibiza. Today’s Budget offered UK drivers £2000 to scrap any car over 10-years old for a brand new one. Granted, any new model should be more fuel efficient than its predecessor. That is, if they are exchanging like for like. The Government could have taken this scheme further by fully incentivizing low emission cars.

It would appear Alistair did not listen to the advice of one of his top advisors Professor Julia King, who last year published (The Treasury funded) King Review on low carbon cars. In a recent interview with Professor King I asked her what the Government could do right now to encourage lower emission cars? King made the point that if we all drove the most fuel efficient car in its class, there would be an automatic 30% reduction in carbon. Surely then the Government should be incentivizing the car industry to grow a market for low emission cars rather merely “new cars”.
